What TikTok Shop is

TikTok Shop is a marketplace built directly into the TikTok app. Products appear in videos, in LIVE streams and in a dedicated Shop tab, and the purchase happens in the app without the buyer leaving the feed. Discovery and checkout are the same moment.

It is no longer small. US gross merchandise value reached $15.1 billion in 2025, up 68% on the year before, and eMarketer projects more than $20 billion in 2026. There are roughly 475,000 US shops, against about 4,450 in mid-2023.

How TikTok Shop works, end to end

  1. A seller lists products in Seller Center, with images, variants and shipping templates.
  2. Content makes them visible. The seller's own videos, creator affiliate videos, LIVE streams, or paid Spark Ads. Nothing sells from the catalogue alone; TikTok Shop has no meaningful search demand of its own.
  3. A viewer taps the product in the video and buys in-app.
  4. TikTok takes a 6% referral fee, pays any creator commission out of the sale, and settles the rest to the seller.
  5. The seller ships, and fulfilment performance affects how much reach the shop gets afterwards.

The four ways to sell on it

RouteWho it suitsFollower minimum
Business sellerBrands with their own productsNone
Individual sellerSole tradersNone
Affiliate creatorCreators promoting others' products for commission 1,000 pilot / 5,000 full
LIVE sellingEither, as a format rather than a route

The follower requirement applies only to the affiliate route. Selling your own products as a business has none, which is the single most common misunderstanding about the platform.

What it costs

CostRate
Referral fee, most US categories6%
New seller, first 30 days after first sale3%
Affiliate commission, set by you10–20%
Monthly or listing feeNone

The referral fee is the smallest real cost. Creator commission and product samples decide your margin. The fee calculator works it out per order.

How it differs from every other marketplace

On Amazon or Google, demand already exists and you compete to capture it. Someone types what they want. On TikTok, nobody was shopping. The video creates the demand and the checkout captures it seconds later.

That single difference explains almost everything else about the platform: why content volume matters more than listing optimisation, why affiliate creators drive about 42% of US GMV, why the price sweet spot is $15 to $30 where a decision can be made in seconds, and why a great product with no content simply does not sell.

Is it worth it

Honestly, it depends on whether you can produce content consistently, and the numbers are stark. The median US seller earns about $1,150 a month. The top 1% earn about $215,000 and drive roughly 60% of all GMV.

That gap is not luck. It is content volume plus a creator affiliate programme. If you can resource those, the channel is unusually cheap to enter for the reach available. If you cannot, the median outcome is the realistic one.

Common questions

What is TikTok Shop?

A marketplace built into the TikTok app. Products appear in videos, LIVE streams and a Shop tab, and buyers purchase in-app without leaving the feed. US GMV reached $15.1 billion in 2025.

How does TikTok Shop work?

A seller lists products, content makes them visible, a viewer taps and buys in-app, TikTok takes a 6% referral fee and pays any creator commission out of the sale, and the seller ships. Content is what drives sales; the catalogue alone does not.

Do you need followers to use TikTok Shop?

Not to sell your own products as a business or individual seller. The follower requirement applies only to affiliate creators promoting other people's products: 1,000 for the pilot tier, 5,000 for full access.

How much does TikTok Shop cost?

A 6% referral fee in most US categories, discounted to 3% for your first 30 days after the first sale. No monthly or listing fee. Affiliate commission is separate, set by you, typically 10 to 20%.

Is TikTok Shop worth it?

It depends entirely on whether you can produce content consistently. The median US seller earns about $1,150 a month while the top 1% earn about $215,000 and drive around 60% of GMV. The difference is content volume plus an affiliate programme.

Is TikTok Shop the same as TikTok ads?

No. Ads buy distribution for content. TikTok Shop is the marketplace and checkout. They work together, and the best results come from putting paid spend behind organic videos that already converted.
