Comparison

TikTok Shop against Amazon, with the fee comparison done properly

The 6% versus 8 to 15% comparison is incomplete. What the all-in cost really is, where the margin difference comes from, and why the best sellers run both.

The fee comparison, done properly

Most comparisons put TikTok's 6% referral fee against Amazon's 8–15% plus $39.99 a month and declare a winner. That comparison is incomplete in a way that flatters TikTok.

TikTok referral 6% + affiliate commission 16–26% all in Amazon referral 8–15% + FBA and monthly fee plus $39.99/mo 0% 30% of order value
Take rate, honestly compared. TikTok's headline 6% beats Amazon's 8 to 15%, which is the comparison most articles stop at. Adding creator commission puts TikTok's real all-in cost in the same territory. The genuine differences are elsewhere.

TikTok's referral fee genuinely is lower, and there is no monthly seller fee. But you pay 10 to 20% in affiliate commission on top, and that is not optional in practice, because affiliate content drives 42% of platform GMV. Sell without creators and you are competing for the remainder.

Amazon's fees are higher and more predictable. TikTok's are lower and more elastic, and the elastic part is the part you control.

Margins in practice

Reported net margins run 15–30% on TikTok Shop against 10–20% on Amazon. Real but smaller than the headline fee gap implies, and it comes with higher variance: TikTok revenue depends on content performing, which is less predictable than search demand.

The comparison people should make is not fees, it is demand. On Amazon, demand already exists and you compete for it. On TikTok, you create demand and keep more of what you create. Those are different businesses that happen to both involve shipping boxes.

Which to start on

Start with TikTok Shop if you are a new consumer brand in a demo-friendly category, beauty, supplements, hair, home, pet or fashion under about $50, with no existing search demand for your name. Nobody is searching for you yet, so a channel that requires search will not find you.

Start with Amazon if your category already has search volume, your product is a better version of something people look for by name, or it does not demonstrate well on camera.

Running both

The sellers growing fastest in 2026 are not choosing. They run TikTok for discovery and first purchase and Amazon for the reorder and the search-intent buyer, because a customer who discovers you on TikTok will very often buy the second one on Amazon out of habit.

Which has a measurement consequence worth stating plainly: TikTok will look less profitable than it is, because some of the revenue it creates gets attributed to Amazon. Judging TikTok on last-click alone will make you cut the channel that generated the demand.

Common questions

Is TikTok Shop cheaper than Amazon?

On headline fees yes: 6% referral and no monthly fee, against 8 to 15% plus FBA and $39.99 a month. But TikTok adds 10 to 20% in creator commission, which is not really optional since affiliate content drives 42% of platform GMV, so the all-in costs are closer than the headline suggests.

Which has better margins?

Reported net margins are 15 to 30% on TikTok Shop against 10 to 20% on Amazon. TikTok is higher but more variable, because revenue depends on content performing rather than on existing search demand.

Should I sell on TikTok Shop or Amazon?

TikTok first if you are a new consumer brand in a demo-friendly category with no existing search demand for your name. Amazon first if people already search for your category by name or your product does not demonstrate well on camera.

Can I sell on both at once?

That is what the fastest-growing sellers do. TikTok drives discovery and first purchase, Amazon captures the reorder and the search-intent buyer.

Will TikTok cannibalise my Amazon sales?

More often the reverse: TikTok creates demand that gets fulfilled on Amazon. The risk is measurement, not cannibalisation. Judged on last-click alone TikTok looks less profitable than it is, and you can end up cutting the channel that generated the demand.
