Beauty, skincare and fragrance

The category TikTok
was built for.

Beauty is the largest category on TikTok Shop at roughly 22.5% of GMV, and the reason is mechanical: the product shows a visible change on camera in seconds.

Why beauty leads, and why that generalises

It is not taste. It is that the five traits predicting what sells on TikTok Shop all happen to describe a skincare product at once: a visible before and after, understandable without explanation, margin above 60%, repeat purchase, and it ships cheaply without breaking.

Beauty, skincare and fragrance are three different jobs

Skincare

Sells on demonstrated change: texture, redness, a routine over days. Content is the proof, so the format is the before-and-after and the honest timeline. Repeat purchase makes the economics work.

Colour cosmetics

Sells on the swatch and the application. Instant, visual, and the easiest of the three to demonstrate in eight seconds. Shade range is a merchandising problem before it is a content one.

Fragrance

Sells on something nobody can show. Description, bottle, occasion and creator trust do the work instead. Closer to storytelling than demonstration, and it needs its own content pillars rather than borrowed skincare ones.

Fragrance is the one people get wrong. Teams apply the skincare playbook, film the bottle, and wonder why nothing converts. If you cannot demonstrate the product, the creator has to be the proof, which changes who you recruit and what you brief them to say.

What we run for a beauty brand

WorkWhat it means in this category
Catalogue and imageryFive images minimum or the listing drops a quality tier. Shade and size variants set up properly so a creator can link the exact SKU
Commission modelled first18 to 20% is the going rate here, so the price has to carry it before launch. Raising a rate later is easy; cutting one is not
Creator recruitment at volumeBeauty creators have the most options on the platform, so the pitch and the sample turnaround decide who posts. Eighty mid-tier beats three large
Sampling logistics$2,000 to $10,000 a month in product across an active programme, tracked to the individual creator and chased until content is live
Content pillars per lineSkincare, colour and fragrance briefed separately, because they convert on different evidence
Spark Ads on proven organicPaid distribution behind videos that already held attention, never behind a video the feed rejected

Our proof in this category

Honest version: our published TikTok case study is a pet supplement brand, 800 followers to 92K and $0 to $52K a month. It is a consumable in an engaged niche, which is structurally the same shape as beauty, but it is not a beauty case study and we are not going to present it as one.

Ask us on the call what we would expect for your specific line, and where the comparison breaks down. The case study is here in full.

Questions

Why does beauty do so well on TikTok Shop?

Because the product shows a visible change on camera in seconds, which is the single strongest predictor of what sells on the platform. Beauty and personal care is roughly 22.5% of TikTok Shop GMV, the largest category.

What commission should a beauty brand offer?

Beauty and skincare commonly sit at 18 to 20%, at the top of the market, because gross margins carry it. Below about 15% you will struggle to recruit creators in this category specifically, since they can earn more elsewhere for the same effort.

Does fragrance work on TikTok Shop?

Yes, and it is a genuine anomaly: you cannot smell anything through a screen, so fragrance sells on description, bottle, occasion and creator trust rather than demonstration. It needs a different content approach from skincare, closer to storytelling than to before-and-after.

What price point works for beauty?

The $15 to $30 window drives the most volume, which suits most single skincare and cosmetics SKUs. Above about $75, a fragrance or a set converts better on LIVE, where a host has time to build the case.

Do I need to be a known brand?

No, and that is most of the opportunity. TikTok distributes per video rather than per brand, so an unknown product with content that converts outranks a household name with none.

Is beauty too competitive now?

It is the most competitive category on the platform, and it is also the largest. The competition is for attention, not for shelf space, so the constraint is content volume and creator roster rather than brand recognition.
