How to sell on TikTok Shop, including the numbers most guides skip

Eligibility, the complete fee stack, a 30-day plan, and an honest look at what the median seller actually earns.

TikTok Shop stopped being an experiment some time ago. US gross merchandise value reached $15.1 billion in 2025, up 68% from $9 billion the year before, and eMarketer projects it clears $20 billion in 2026. There are roughly 475,000 US shops, against about 4,450 in mid-2023.

What TikTok Shop actually is

It is a marketplace welded to a video feed. The part that matters is that discovery and checkout happen in the same place: someone watches a video, taps, and buys without leaving the app. There is no landing page, no ad click, no second session.

That changes what a product listing is for. On Amazon a shopper arrives already intending to buy something and your listing competes on specification. On TikTok nobody arrived intending to buy anything, so the video does the persuading and the listing only has to remove friction. Sellers who port their Amazon copy across usually find it does nothing, and conclude the channel does not work.

Who is eligible, and what it costs

Two routes in, and people conflate them constantly.

RouteWho it is forFollower minimumKey documents
Seller (you sell your own products)Brands and businesses None Business registration, EIN, business bank account in the registered name, W-9
Individual sellerSole traders None US passport, driver licence, state ID or permanent resident card, plus address, tax and bank details
Affiliate creator (you promote others' products)Creators 1,000 / 5,000 US government ID plus SSN or ITIN, 18 or over, US resident

The follower rule is not one number. At 1,000 to 5,000 followers you enter the Affiliate Creator Pilot Program, which caps you at three shoppable videos a day and three shoppable LIVE sessions a week. Full affiliate status needs 5,000 followers, a Creator Health Rating above 176, and completion of onboarding tasks including roughly ten organic orders. Most guides quote the 1,000 figure and stop there, which is how creators end up surprised by the caps.

Selling as a business has no follower requirement at all. If you are a brand, the follower question is irrelevant to you.

The fees, in full

TikTok's own cut is the smallest number on this page, which is why fee comparisons against Amazon flatter TikTok and why they mislead.

So the honest arithmetic on a $40 product with a 20% commission is 6% to TikTok and 20% to the creator, leaving roughly 74% of revenue before cost of goods, shipping, returns and samples. Model that before you set a price, not after.

Tax documents are optional when you register but become mandatory once you have earned $2,000. Payouts stop until they are supplied. Upload them at setup and the problem never arrives.

Setting the shop up

  1. Register at seller-us.tiktok.com with the entity route that matches your documents. Names must match your filed registration character for character. Mismatches are the ordinary reason applications bounce.
  2. Verify. Documents must be valid, uncropped, under 10 MB, and in JPG, PNG, JPEG or PDF.
  3. Link a bank account in the same name as the registered entity.
  4. Build the catalogue. Titles that read on a phone, images that hold up at speed, correct category attributes. This is where revenue is decided.
  5. Set shipping templates and a returns policy. Fulfilment metrics affect your shop's standing; slow dispatch throttles reach.
  6. Open the affiliate programme and set a commission rate you modelled in the previous section.

Why most new shops make nothing

This is the part sales pages leave out. Revenue on TikTok Shop is extraordinarily concentrated: the top 1% of US sellers drive around 60% of all GMV, and the top 0.1% take more than a quarter of it. The top 1% earn about $215,000 a month. The median seller earns about $1,150 a month.

That gap is not luck. It is content volume and an affiliate programme. Affiliate creator content drives 42% of US TikTok Shop GMV, and the top 0.5% of creators produce 38% of all affiliate revenue. A shop with no creators attached is competing for the residual.

What this means if you are deciding whether to start. "Open a shop and post occasionally" has a median outcome near $1,150 a month. The channel rewards operators who treat it as a full sales channel with a content engine and a creator roster. If you cannot resource that, partner it out or do not start.

What to do in your first 30 days

  • Days 1–7. Register, verify, upload tax documents immediately. Build the catalogue properly rather than fast.
  • Days 8–14. Post daily. You are gathering data on which hooks hold attention, not selling yet. Use the 3% new-seller window on whatever does sell.
  • Days 15–21. Open the affiliate programme, start outreach, ship samples. Expect a long lag between sending product and seeing content.
  • Days 22–30. Put Spark Ads behind the organic videos that already performed. Do not boost something the feed rejected.

Six to ten weeks is realistic before an affiliate programme contributes meaningfully. Anyone promising revenue in week one is describing paid ads.

Common questions

Do I need followers to sell on TikTok Shop?

Not as a business or individual seller. The follower requirement applies to affiliate creators promoting other people's products: 1,000 followers for the capped pilot programme, 5,000 for full affiliate status.

How much does TikTok take per sale?

A 6% referral fee in most US categories, covering both commission and payment processing, discounted to 3% for the first 30 days after your first sale. Selected jewellery and pre-owned categories are 5%. Affiliate commission is separate and set by you.

How much do TikTok Shop sellers actually make?

The median US seller earns roughly $1,150 a month while the top 1% earn about $215,000. The top 1% of sellers drive around 60% of all GMV. Outcomes are extremely concentrated, and the difference is content volume plus an affiliate programme.

How long before a new TikTok Shop makes money?

Shop setup and first content take two to three weeks. A functioning affiliate programme takes six to ten weeks, because creators must be recruited, sampled and given time to post.

What documents do I need?

Business sellers: company registration, EIN, a business bank account in the registered name, and a W-9. Individual sellers: a US passport, driver licence, state ID or permanent resident card, plus address, tax and bank details. Files must be under 10 MB and uncropped. Tax documents become mandatory once you have earned $2,000.
