Beauty leads at 22.5% of GMV, but category is a weak predictor. The $15 to $30 window and five product traits matter far more.
Beauty and personal care has led since launch and shows no sign of moving. That is not a reason to sell beauty; it is the most competitive category on the platform for exactly that reason. It is a reason to understand why it leads, because the reason generalises.
Products between $10 and $40 generate the highest sales volume, and $15 to $30 is the sweet spot for the impulse purchase short video produces. That is a decision made in seconds, without research, from a phone.
Above roughly $75 the feed stops working and LIVE starts. Higher-priced products convert better on LIVE, where a host has 30 to 60 minutes to demonstrate value and answer questions in real time. If your product is $120, the answer is not a better video, it is a different format. LIVE structure is here.
Category is a weak predictor. These are stronger, and they are why beauty leads.
| Product type | Why it struggles |
|---|---|
| High-consideration, high-ticket | Nobody spends $400 from a feed. Possible on LIVE, hard anywhere else |
| Thin-margin electronics | High order value, low margin, so there is nothing left for creator commission and the affiliate programme never gets going |
| Anything needing a size or fit decision | Returns destroy the economics twice, once on shipping and once on clawed-back commission |
| Products with no visible outcome | Software, services, anything where the video has nothing to show |
Beauty and personal care leads at roughly 22.5% of GMV, followed by fashion and accessories near 20% and womenswear around 12.5%. But category predicts less than product traits: a visible before and after, margin above 60%, and repeat purchase.
$10 to $40 drives the highest volume, with $15 to $30 the sweet spot for impulse buying from short video. Above about $75, products convert better on LIVE than in the feed.
Yes, but not through the feed. Above $75 you need LIVE, where a host has 30 to 60 minutes to demonstrate value and take questions.
Around 60% gross or better. You pay 6% to TikTok and 10 to 20% in creator commission, and without room for that commission you cannot run an affiliate programme, which is where 42% of platform GMV comes from.
Model the margin first, then make five videos rather than one, and judge on click-through rather than views. Open an affiliate programme only once the product has shown it converts.
