The TikTok Creator Marketplace, and why it is not the affiliate programme

Paid brand deals with a ~10,000 follower bar, versus commission with a 1,000 bar. Most people conflate them. Here is the difference, and which to be on.

What the TikTok Creator Marketplace is

The TikTok Creator Marketplace, now housed inside TikTok One, is TikTok's own directory for paid brand collaborations. A brand searches creators by niche, audience and performance, sends an invitation, and if the creator accepts they produce sponsored content and TikTok handles the payment. It is the official version of the brand-deal DM, with first-party data attached.

What it is not is the affiliate programme. That confusion costs people time, so the next section deals with it first.

Marketplace vs the Shop affiliate programme

They stack. A brand can pay a Marketplace fee for a video and also give you an affiliate link in it. The best creator deals on the platform are exactly that: a floor from the fee, upside from the commission.

Requirements for creators

The published thresholds move, and TikTok does not always state them, but the 2026 guidance from agencies and TikTok's own partner material converges on:

  • Around 10,000 followers. Lower than the 100,000 the Marketplace originally looked for.
  • Roughly 100,000 video likes in the last 28 days, which is the engagement gate and the one that trips people with old, dormant audiences.
  • At least three posts in the same 28 days. Inactive accounts are not listed regardless of size.
  • 18 or over, account in good standing, in a supported country.

Meeting the bar gets you listed. Getting invited is a different matter, and it is mostly niche clarity: a brand searching "skincare, 25 to 34, US" needs to see that description in your last thirty posts.

How brands use it

Any legitimate business can create a Marketplace account through TikTok One by signing in with a TikTok Ads Manager account. There is no follower or spend minimum on the brand side. From there the workflow is search, filter, review the creator's first-party performance and audience data, invite, agree deliverables and fee, and pay through TikTok on delivery.

The first-party data is the reason to use it over cold outreach. Public follower counts are the least useful number about a creator; the Marketplace shows a brand the audience demographics and recent performance that actually predict whether a post will sell.

What deals actually look like

Fees are negotiated, so there is no published rate, but the structure is consistent: a defined number of videos, usage rights for a period, sometimes an exclusivity window, and increasingly a Spark Ads authorisation so the brand can put paid distribution behind the post. That last one is where creators leave money on the table: authorising a brand to boost your video is worth charging for separately, because it is the part that makes the deal work for them.

Which one should you be on

  • Under 5,000 followers: the affiliate programme, pilot tier. The Marketplace will not list you yet, and affiliate income is the fastest way to prove your audience buys, which is what gets you Marketplace invitations later.
  • 5,000 to 10,000: full affiliate programme. Build the sales record.
  • Above 10,000 with active engagement: both. Fee deals for the floor, affiliate links for the upside, and the affiliate data is your Marketplace pitch.

The affiliate programme step-by-step is here. If you would rather someone ran the whole thing, that is what we do.
