Free samples are how most creators start earning on TikTok Shop. A seller ships you the product at their cost, you post about it, and you earn commission on anything that sells. Across a working programme, brands budget $2,000 to $10,000 a month in product for exactly this, so the supply is real. Getting approved is the part people find harder than they expect.

Who can request samples

You need to be in the TikTok Shop affiliate programme first, and there are two tiers.

TierFollowersSample access
Creator Pilot Program1,000–5,000 Limited. A 30-day window with restricted features
Full affiliate5,000+Full sample access

To graduate from the pilot to full access you must hit at least one of these: publish six shoppable videos of eight seconds or more, host one shopping LIVE of at least five minutes, or generate ten orders through shoppable content.

The rule that quietly removes people: you must have posted a shoppable video or hosted a shopping LIVE within the last 120 days to stay eligible. Creators who take a season off come back to find sample requests closed, and usually blame the algorithm rather than the dormancy rule.

Your account also needs a healthy standing. Sellers see it, and a poor rating is a silent decline.

How to request them, step by step

  1. Set your niche so a seller can see it in three seconds. Bio, recent posts and category should agree. This does more for approval rates than anything else on this list.
  2. Open the affiliate marketplace in TikTok Shop for Creator and filter to products open to sample requests.
  3. Pick products you would post about anyway. Fit beats commission rate at this stage, because your approval history is the asset you are building.
  4. Write the request as a one-line pitch that names the video. "I will film a 7-day test in my morning routine" gets approved. "Please send samples" does not.
  5. Post within a week of delivery, and tag the product so the sale is attributed to you.

The 2026 quota rules

Tier 1, under $5,000 GMV/mo 5 active Tier 2, high performers 20 active Requests are blocked once you hit the cap, until earlier samples have produced live content. Introduced in 2026 to stop request spam.
Sample quotas are tiered by the GMV you generate. Which means the way to get more samples is not to ask more often; it is to post what you already received.

New for 2026, and the single most misunderstood part. Sample requests are capped by how much revenue you generate, not by how many followers you have. Under $5,000 monthly GMV you can hold five active samples; proven performers go to twenty. Hit the cap and you cannot request again until the earlier ones have produced live content.

So the quota is a queue, not an allowance. Creators who request ten things and post about two are not throttled by TikTok as a punishment; they are simply holding their own slots hostage.

Free versus refundable samples

TypeWho paysWhat to watch
Free sampleThe seller, entirely Nothing owed, but your posting record is being watched
Refundable sampleYou pay, refunded on milestones The refund is conditional on hitting sales or GMV targets. Read the threshold before you order, because if you miss it you have simply bought the product

Why requests get declined

  • Niche mismatch. A cookware brand can tell you have never filmed in a kitchen. This is the most common reason by a wide margin.
  • A history of not posting. Sellers see your fulfilment record. One round of silence closes several doors at once.
  • Dormant account. The 120-day rule above.
  • Quota already full. Not a decline as such, but it looks identical from your side.
  • Generic request text. A seller choosing between forty creators reads the one sentence you wrote.

What sellers see when you apply

Worth knowing, because it changes how you write the request. A seller reviewing sample requests sees your follower count, your niche, your recent engagement, and crucially whether creators like you have converted for them before. They are not choosing the biggest account. They are choosing the one most likely to produce a video that sells, because every sample is stock they have paid for and shipped.

Which is also why the pitch works: it tells them exactly what they are buying.

If you are a brand on the other side of this, running the sampling programme is most of the job, and it is where most programmes leak.

Common questions

How do you get free samples on TikTok Shop?

Join the affiliate programme, open the affiliate marketplace in TikTok Shop for Creator, filter to products open to sample requests, and apply with a one-line pitch naming the video you will make. Fit with your niche matters more than follower count.

How many followers do you need for free samples on TikTok Shop?

1,000 gets you into the Creator Pilot Program with limited access. Full sample access needs 5,000 followers, or graduating the pilot by publishing six shoppable videos of eight seconds or more, hosting one shopping LIVE of at least five minutes, or generating ten orders.

How many samples can I request at once?

Under $5,000 monthly GMV you can hold five active samples. High-performing creators can hold up to twenty. You cannot request more until earlier samples have produced live content.

Are TikTok Shop samples really free?

Free samples are paid for entirely by the seller. Refundable samples are different: you pay up front and are refunded only if you hit a sales or GMV milestone, so check the threshold before ordering.

Why do my sample requests keep getting declined?

Usually niche mismatch, a record of receiving samples without posting, or a dormant account. You must have posted a shoppable video or hosted a shopping LIVE in the last 120 days to stay eligible.

Do I have to post about a sample I receive?

Nothing forces you to, but sellers track it and your approval rate collapses if you do not. Your posting record is the asset that unlocks better products later.
